How to deal with beggars in India

how to deal with beggars in india

Let’s be clear on this. India is no longer a poor country.

There was a time when people used to die of starvation. But things have changed, no such thing is happening any more.

However, You will still find poor people on the streets sleeping rough but not all of them will be beggars.

The Indian government has done lots to uplift the people of India out of poverty.

But…

You do find beggars on the streets:)

Many of them are concentrated at religious places. You go to a temple, a mosque, a church or a gurudwara (a Sikh place of worship) and you will be swamped by beggars.

(More on Hinduism here)

You will find some at traffic lights. As soon as the car or taxi stops, you will find beggars knocking on your car window.

To be honest, most of them look perfectly fine and able to work. These beggars are not beggars in the real sense but opportunists.

They just want to feed on your emotions….

So how do you deal with beggars in India?

You can shoo them away,

Give them money,

Just ignore them and do nothing,

Give them something to eat like a biscuit or something,

Take them to a restaurant and feed them,

Don’t stop, keep walking as if you don’t care,

Give them a fresh bottle of water and say this is all you have,

Tell them you don’t have money,

Tell them they look perfectly fine and they don’t need any money,

Keep your windows up,

Tell them to get lost,

Beat them up (not really).

Begging in India has become a business. You’ll be surprised to know that in some cases, beggars have been found to be millionaires.

Just take a look at this video

If your heart does cry out for these beggars, perhaps you could spare a few change. It’s up to you entirely.

Enjoy India. India is almost beggar free.

  1. Lady you are seriously uneducated. Please quote your sources on urban poverty rates falling, India has one of the highest numbers of under nourished/malnourished children in the world. Do mention also the details of the ‘lots’ the government has done for the urban poor. As for ‘looking perfectly’ fine to work would you care to talk about the staggering unemployment in our country ? How to deal with beggars ? With kindness, compassion and wisdom. I’d like to beat you up.

  2. I have been visiting India for the last 20 years and have seen so many changes. It’s true that beggars have reduced and you don’t find them as you used to 20 years back. This is good news for India. Like you said you do find them at holy places and traffic signals.

  3. when i read to story on beggar. i found some interesting that i can’t believe that begging in India is a type of business. so beggar are too much richest .. Read below news

  4. This topic is unique which is barely discussed through any other blog. Especially, when you are living in a country like India where you could barely find a bigger free place. Dealing with them also seemed to be uneasy. Thanks for the effort in making such a great read.

  5. dealing with beggars is not a problem as there is no demand of money from beggars, if you like to donate some money then you can or else simply you can ignore them.

  6. Shalu,

You post made me realized due to our emotional reasons, begging is growing as business. We must be watchful.

Recently went to one Satsang ,where it was discussed ,we serve to charity ,poor ,beggars because we feel we are helping and it gives us psychological satisfaction .

God who is Omniscient cant He help beggars and poor? God can help anyone easily
, but it is due to their destiny they are going through being poor and are in suffering. If we give a beggar a meal, we help him for a day, but his destiny remains so he will continue suffering. How many beggars can we really help and for how long? If we instead teach the beggar how to do spiritual practice, he can overcome his destiny, which is the root of his suffering forever.

  9. The government is doing nothing to reduced poverty. Hope that someone will do something to reduced the poverty line. The beggars will automatically disappear.
