Crimes against women in India (large scale female infanticide/gender-bias/rape/dowry deaths/domestic violence) are very common but crimes against female tourists to India should not be overlooked by the tourism industry of India.
A Swiss woman has been gang-raped by a group of men in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is thought the woman was camping in a forest with her husband on cycling trip when about 8 men attacked the couple on the 15th of March 2013, robbed the pair and raped the woman in front of her husband. The woman (aged 40) was later admitted to a hospital in Gwalior city.
Various sources are reporting that the attackers tied the husband and raped the women in the husband’s presence, and then they stole their money and valuables. It is thought that the couple was on their way to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.

Here are some of the sources: BBC – Guardian – Sky News – Yahoo News
I cannot explain the lack of this news in the Indian media. Indian media are very sensitive and blindly-patriotic and will not report certain news.
I am extremely ashamed of these crimes against female travellers to India. Foreign women travelling to India must be extremely careful of where they go, who they are with and what they wear. Rape in India is very common – so common that most rapes are not even registered with the police.
Let me stress that this incidence is not a reflection of Indian society. Most Indians couldn’t be kinder, but this is a horrific act and makes me furious however it’s something that travellers to India should not judge this country on the basis of this crime.
Here’s how to protect yourself from rape when you are travelling in India and some further travel safety tips for India.
How horrible can people get Shalu!
I’ve been away and haven’t seen nor heard the news, and am reading about it here just now. Yet another such incident from the many that keep happening.
When will people stop? Why don’t they realize that tomorrow it could be their known ones in this woman’s place? Wasn’t one Delhi incident enough to make them realize? Or perhaps that happened with an Indian, unlike this one? And yes, one bad incident like this is enough to tarnish the image of Indians, when they are not like this at all.
I wonder why the Indian media hasn’t covered this so far, or perhaps they will build up something and have it up tomorrow. It’s so shocking…and sad that it happens in our country.
Wish the police remain more vigilant and the law makers come out with a REAL law about rape – it’s high time.
Thanks for sharing this with us. My heart goes out to the poor woman and her husband, who would also be as broken as her.

I get very upset when I hear these news in the media. Although this news is not on Indians newspapers, NDTV have reported it. The police is the real culprit, they have failed to protect women and many of the times, its the police who are not doing the job properly as they are insensitive to women’s issues.
Lets face it, rape is extremely common in India, so common that most of the rapes are not even reported. It breaks my heart to read news of tourists being raped in India. Its a shame for all Indians.
Thank you for your comment and sharing it.

Hi Shalu,
This shocking incident will make female foreign tourists even more nervous about visiting India. I read on the Trip Advisor site that they can’t even relax in the Connaught Place park, Delhi, without been surrounded by young men and then having to run for it, feeling afraid for their safety.
I’m in India myself next month for a five week holiday and I’m thinking that if I see any harassment or assaults taking place, I’ll go over and give the guys such a slap. I’ll probably get myself arrested by the police though; looking for easy money.
I like your Death Penalty for Rape poster, but do you think that the law will ever be created, what with some government ministers and police officers having committed rapes themselves?
Did you see the report on NDTV last week of the woman going to some police officers to report being sexually molested and then getting battered by them for having the temerity to do so? Shame. Shame.
Hello Terry
You know these incidences are very disturbing as a woman. I was very disturbed by the woman who was raped and killed in Delhi in December 2012. There is now a talk about a rape-bill being introduced in India but we don’t seem to be going anywhere. India is a rape nation but we just fail to talk about it. Harassment of women is common. But at the same time, I just cannot stress enough that Indians are extremely nice people just like anywhere in the world but its seems that we have notoriously large number of sexually starved psychopathic men looking for adventures. I wish you the best on your travels to India. Please do not engage in activities that will end you in prison. Not all Indians are rapists.
I did not see the NDTV report, I must have missed that one. Thank you for your comment. Please feel free to visit again and share your thoughts.
Best of wishes to you.
Take care
Man, India is becoming haven for rapists. I hope that rapists go to court and experience death sentence. I heard that one of the suspects in a previous rape case committed suicide?
I agree completely with you that India is a haven for rapists. I think rape is common in India but in recent months, it has been highlighted a lot. Its a shame really. I feel extremely saddened to hear such news be it Indian or foreign.
Any crime against any women should not be tolerated, nationality does not matter. Even Death penalty is less .The culprits (specially rapists) should be stripped in front of public and hit with stones till they die. Women should do these honors.
But do you think politicians will pass this bill . No because they themselves and their sons are among the rapists.
Travel India
HI Shalu jee
This incident has ashamed us, a clear cut case of systemic failure.
Delhi incident has really been a shocker across the world and this one would surely tarnish India’s from bad to worst.
The perpetrators of this act should go through the worst of the worst punishment but wouldn’t be possible without the Law making and enforcing agencies work in tandem.
Thanks for bringing this to your forum.
Sapna
Pathetic! Women are being treated like dogs(or maybe less than that also!)
WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT NOT DOING ANYTHING???
Looks like women should stop depending on the Govt and take precautions by themselves!…..and rapists should not be simply hanged! They should be strangled to death!!!
I must say our government is the worst government in the world. They are shameless and selfish people. Why we adopted such a worthless government.
This is horrible. The Indian government should not tolerate this act and should be more strict with their policies especially in protecting the tourists.
well you’r absolutely right Shalu with your point of view, Crimes against women is increase on day by day in India. India government did lot of thing to stop Crimes against women but didn’t get benefit of anti rap law. it was just totally wasted.
How can be people so ashamed in India. Due to few people whole community feel little And affect the tourism industry.
Govt should take necessary steps to stop this.
very shameful incident ,,these types of incident’s ashamed us in front of world,,,these incidents are become common and increasing day by day, because of weak low and order against rape in India.
’m in India myself next month for a five week holiday and I’m thinking that if I see any harassment or assaults taking place, I’ll go over and give the guys such a slap. I’ll probably get myself arrested by the police though; looking for easy money.
Awsome post. Amazing blog. I’m going to share it with my friends.
Hello Shalu,
This is really such a amazing to read, This is first time when I hear about woman gang in a blog otherwise I just read this kind of news & article on Govt blog’s & site, so you did a wonderful Job Shalu
It is very shameful incident i heard especially for Indians. Culprits must be penalized.
Woman must be respected whether they live in anywhere in world positively. They must be same as our mothers and sisters. A woman is a wife to some one, daughter of some one, mother of some one, sister of someone, grandmother of someone. She must be respected at any cost.
Any crime against any women should not be tolerated, nationality does not matter. Even Death penalty is less .
I am wondering when people of India will behave like educated and civilized people 🙁 . When these rapist will realize ,that they also have mother or sister or wife or child who are also women .. God Help them please .. 🙁
Hi Shalu,
I feel terrible for this woman, but bad and good people are everywhere, and I guess India is not exempt. We need to be careful everywhere at all times. It US is know for its serial killers.
Unfortunately, there are some loose monsters out there and we need to be aware, especially us, women.
Thank God their life were spared at least.
Hi Shalu,
It’s really matter of deep sadness that this kind of rape of Swiss woman happen in our country as well as it’s a dark mark on India that we couldn’t save our guest. Shalu this kind of accident keep happening in India & We have been keep listing this kind of rape cases in India. A gang of Delhi also came out in Delhi as you remember. It was also a shameless matter for Delhi capital of India. Shalu I just say. If we cant’ save our sister & mothers in our capital than how can we save guest in our country. I agree with you, Indian media are very sensitive. All media show the same news on Tv no one catch these kind rape cases in small down & cities.
This is definitely a horrible news! Tourists will surely avoid visiting your country if that incidents continue. I’m praying for the safety of the people their in that place. And I’m hoping to see developments on this matter as soon as possible. Thank you for this information. I definitely gained ideas about your country.
Its a sheer shame and nothing else. God knows when are we going to learn from this in India. Hope we pass a anto rape bill which put a end on this forever.
Hi Salu,
Your article always teach me something, It is always unique and informative. I think crime is major problem of India. this problem is happened with women mostly.
Thanks for share with me!!
It’s seen that Delhi is not safe for women.
It’s really sad!
Anti rape law has passed in Look sava. So, let’s see what happens.
When will people stop? Why don’t they realize that tomorrow it could be their known ones in this woman’s place? Wasn’t one Delhi incident enough to make them realize? Hi Shalu,
Rape is common now a days in India. But the victim is now a foreigner. How can they do that? They never think what will happen if the news will flash worldwide.
I hope the gang rape group will be soon given highest punishment – Death penalty. So no one will ever try to do it
Sometime I feels that we are not what we thing about us. Manoj kumar and Akshay kumar’s lecture in movie are just dialogs. Shame on all people who are the reason behind this. They are making all of us guilty.
How can we claim for best cultured people??
Ohh! so bad! wherever you go you find different crimes again women ! why , why this HAPPPENED? And the crimes against indian women is one of the known crimes!! this is bad news!! thank you for sharing and make us aware of what’s happening in the world.
Hi Shula,
Thank you so much for sharing this and the information on how to protect oneself when travelling in India. Sally
Something similar happened in Brazil. This is a global phenomenon that has been happening for ages, but with the rise of technology, the stories of these horrors can finally spread and raise awareness for all about the suffering that women have to go through. Thank you for doing your part to spread awareness, Shalu!
Seems the biggest democracy do not have any laws to protect women. i visit your blog too often i found at least 2-3 writeup on rape
Any crime against any women should not be tolerated, nationality does not matter. Even Death penalty is less .The culprits (specially rapists) should be stripped in front of public and hit with stones till they die. Women should do these honors.
This is very nice post and today day by increase this type of cases when will be stop, very sad when i say I am Indian. thanks for sharing the useful information.

15th of March 2013 rape case is really very shocking.8 men attacked the couple and raped the woman in front of her husband.Very disgusting.Death penalty for rapist.
This post will help the internet visitors for setting up new blog or even a blog from start to
end.
Crimes anyway already are absurd , there are now crimes against women that really impresses us. When we think we’ve seen it all , something new appears.
India has seen outrage and widespread protests against attacks on women. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India’s treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.
Local people are very angry and ashamed over this episode
I get very upset when I hear these news in the media. Although this news is not on Indians newspapers, NDTV have reported it
So Sad. There should be only death for rapers And Government Needs to Pass The Bill Clearly.
I get very upset when I hear these news in the media.
This incident is really horrible and heartbreaking. Thank you for the post it gives a very informative awareness information with the tourist . I really love this post and your blog keep on writing and inspiring and spreading good news. I will definitely read more on your blog post.
Here people are talking like India is the world’s largest crime-ridden country. It is true that a foreigner’s rap is bad, but it is also wrong to define India like this.
There is a need in the whole world to shift the attitude towards women crimes like this one – make the rules harsh, even in religious countries which would require a lot of cooperation from different parties
