Diwali For Kids: Why We Celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights

I am so excited to share some wonderful news with you! My new children’s book, Diwali For Kids: Why We Celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, has just been published and is now available on Amazon USA and Amazon UK.

This project has been a true labor of love. As a parent and a storyteller, I wanted to create something special for children that not only celebrates Diwali but also explains the meaning and traditions behind it in a way that is simple, engaging, and fun.

Why I Wrote Diwali For Kids

Diwali is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India and by millions of people across the world. It is also known as the Festival of Lights, a time when families come together to clean their homes, decorate with rangoli, light little clay lamps called diyas, share sweets, exchange gifts, and enjoy fireworks.

But Diwali is more than just lights and sweets. It is a festival filled with stories, values, and traditions that teach children about hope, kindness, togetherness, and the victory of good over evil.

I realized that while there are many books about Christmas, Easter, and other world holidays available for children, there were far fewer that explain Diwali in a clear, kid-friendly way. That’s where the idea for this book came from to give children a chance to learn about Diwali through beautiful illustrations and simple storytelling.

What the Book Includes

Diwali For Kids is designed especially for children ages 3–8. Each page combines colorful watercolor-style illustrations with short, easy-to-understand text that explains a tradition, story, or custom connected with Diwali.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Cleaning the house and preparing for the festival.

  • Buying new clothes and getting ready for celebration.

  • Making rangoli at the doorstep to welcome guests.

  • Lighting diyas and filling homes with light.

  • Praying to Goddess Lakshmi for blessings.

  • The story of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya.

  • The celebration of Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura in South India.

  • Kali Puja in Bengal.

  • Bandi Chhor Divas, how Sikhs mark the festival with lights at the Golden Temple.

  • And how Diwali is celebrated in the USA, UK, and around the world.

It’s not just about the customs, it’s about showing children the deeper meaning of light, hope, freedom, and family.

Why Parents and Teachers Will Love It

The book is perfect for bedtime reading, classroom lessons, or multicultural holiday units. Parents from Indian backgrounds will find it a beautiful way to share their heritage with their children. At the same time, non-Indian families and educators will find it a great tool to introduce children to the diversity of world traditions.

The language is simple, so even the youngest children can follow along, while the pictures bring the festival alive with warmth and color.
