How to Pay in India Without an Indian Bank Account: UPI, Cards, Cash and ATMs
You've arrived in India. The shopkeeper points to a QR code. You have a British or American bank card and a perfectly good smartphone. So why can't you simply pay in the same way as everyone else?
This guide explains the practical ways foreign tourists can pay for things in India, what to do when a payment fails, and why you should never depend on just one method.
There's also a free payment chooser, a troubleshooting tool and a printable one-page checklist.
You do not necessarily need an Indian bank account to pay for everyday purchases in India.
Foreign visitors can often use international cards, withdraw Indian rupees from compatible ATMs, and access certain visitor-oriented UPI wallets when eligible.
However, there is no single payment method guaranteed to work everywhere.
The most reliable approach is to carry a suitable international card, a backup payment method and some Indian cash.
Why Paying in India Can Surprise First-Time Visitors
Walk through a busy Indian market and you may notice something interesting.
A small tea stall has a QR code next to the kettle.
A vegetable seller has a QR payment sign hanging beside the weighing scales.
Even very small businesses may accept digital payments.
You might reasonably think that if everybody is paying with a phone, you can do the same.
But there is an important difference between a regular Indian UPI user and someone arriving with an overseas bank account.
The ordinary UPI experience is usually connected to eligible Indian banking arrangements.
A tourist cannot assume that downloading a popular payment app will automatically connect their foreign bank card to India's domestic UPI system.
Thankfully, there are other ways to pay.
Can Foreign Tourists Use UPI Without an Indian Bank Account?
UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface.
It is India's real-time digital payment system, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India.
UPI enables eligible users to make payments quickly, often by scanning a QR code.
For visitors from abroad, the important distinction is between ordinary bank-linked UPI and special visitor payment services.
What Is UPI One World?
UPI One World is a visitor-oriented prepaid wallet arrangement developed to help eligible international travellers make UPI merchant payments.
Instead of connecting a standard overseas bank account directly to an ordinary Indian UPI app, the traveller uses an authorised prepaid payment instrument.
After completing the provider's required identity checks, the traveller can load funds and use the wallet at supported merchant QR codes.
Importantly, this is not necessarily the same thing as opening an Indian bank account.
There may be restrictions on eligibility, onboarding locations, wallet loading, transaction types and refunds.
NPCI announced a broad rollout for inbound travellers in July 2024. It also described a specific pilot for international delegates at the February 2026 India AI Impact Summit.
This means you should check the current provider and onboarding arrangements rather than assume a particular app will work for every nationality and every arrival airport.
For a dedicated walkthrough, read my existing guide to using UPI in India as a foreign tourist .
Do You Need an Indian SIM Card?
Not necessarily. Certain tourist-wallet arrangements have supported international mobile numbers.
However, eligibility and verification vary between authorised providers.
You may still need a working mobile number, internet access, passport and other identity documents.
A foreign mobile number does not guarantee that every Indian UPI application will accept you.
Can You Use Google Pay or PhonePe with a Foreign Card?
Do not assume that adding a UK or US card to an ordinary payment app will activate Indian UPI.
App names can be confusing because the same brand may support different payment services in different countries.
Before travelling, check which specific product is available to foreign visitors and what type of account it requires.
Can Tourist UPI Wallets Send Money to Friends?
Visitor-oriented prepaid wallets are primarily intended for merchant payments.
Under RBI's relevant PPI framework, these tourist wallets are used for person-to-merchant payments.
Do not assume you can send money directly to a friend's personal UPI account.
Ask the provider about permitted transaction types before loading funds.
Will UK and US Debit or Credit Cards Work in India?
Many hotels, established shops, restaurants and larger businesses accept international payment cards.
But acceptance is not universal.
A merchant might display a card machine that accepts only certain card networks, or their payment terminal may not be enabled for overseas cards.
Your own bank may also decline a transaction because of security checks.
What Should You Check Before Leaving Home?
Confirm that your card can be used internationally and that India is not restricted on your account.
Also check:
- Foreign transaction fees.
- ATM withdrawal charges.
- Cash withdrawal limits.
- Card network acceptance.
- How to report a lost card.
- How to access emergency support.
Carry a second method of payment in case the first one fails.
Should You Pay in Rupees or Your Home Currency?
Sometimes a card terminal or ATM offers to convert your payment into pounds, dollars or another foreign currency.
This is often called dynamic currency conversion.
It may involve a less favourable exchange rate or additional charges.
Generally, consider paying in the local currency, Indian rupees, and allowing your card issuer to perform the conversion.
Check your card's terms because the best choice depends on its fees and exchange-rate arrangements.
Can You Withdraw Cash From Indian ATMs?
Many international bank cards can be used at compatible Indian ATMs.
However, withdrawals depend on card-network support, bank permissions, available cash and machine operation.
Withdrawal limits and fees can vary.
Use ATMs in suitable, well-maintained locations and protect your PIN.
Never accept help from a stranger who asks to handle your card or enter your PIN.

Why Is My Payment Failing in India?
This is a frustrating experience, especially when you're tired after a train journey or standing at a checkout with a queue behind you.
But a rejected payment does not always mean your bank account has a problem.
Here are some common possibilities.
1. The shop does not accept your card
A business may accept domestic cards but not every international card network.
2. Your bank has blocked the transaction
Check your banking app or contact your bank through an official support channel.
3. The ATM cannot process your card
Try another compatible machine from a reputable bank rather than repeatedly retrying a malfunctioning ATM.
4. The QR code is not supported
Your tourist wallet may support merchant payments but not personal transfers or every QR type.
5. The internet connection has failed
If your wallet needs connectivity, an unstable connection can prevent payment.
6. A transaction is pending
Before paying again, check whether your first payment was actually debited.
If money was taken but the merchant reports no receipt, record the transaction reference and contact the payment provider.

How Much Cash Should Tourists Carry in India?
There isn't one perfect amount for every traveller.
Someone staying in a hotel in central Mumbai has different cash needs from someone travelling through a remote rural region.
Think about what you might need to pay for if your digital payments stopped working for a day.
That could include:
- Local transport.
- Food and drinking water.
- Small purchases.
- Unexpected travel delays.
- Basic emergency expenses.
Carry enough for reasonable immediate needs, without carrying unnecessarily large amounts.
Keep your money in more than one secure location.
Where Can You Exchange Money?
Use an authorised foreign-exchange provider, bank or other legitimate service.
Compare rates and fees before agreeing to an exchange.
Ask for a receipt and count the money carefully.
Avoid informal money-changing offers from strangers.
Payment Scams to Avoid in India
Never Enter Your PIN Just to Receive a Payment
Be suspicious if somebody tells you that you must enter a UPI PIN or approve a debit to receive money.
A payment request may authorise money leaving your account.
Check the Merchant Name and Amount
Before authorising a QR payment, check the details displayed on your own device.
A QR sticker may have been replaced, or a merchant may have shown the wrong code.
Do Not Hand Over Your Banking Passwords or One-Time Codes
Nobody should need your card PIN, banking password or one-time verification code to help you make a purchase.
Watch for Duplicate Payments
If a transaction appears to fail, check its status before immediately trying again.
Save the reference number and use your payment provider's official support process for disputes.

Paying for Auto-Rickshaws, Markets and Trains
Auto-Rickshaws and Taxis
Before starting a journey, confirm whether the fare will be metered, prepaid or agreed in advance.
Some drivers accept digital payments, while others may prefer cash.

Markets and Small Shops
Ask about accepted payment methods before the goods are packed.
Cash is useful when a foreign card or tourist wallet cannot be accepted.
Indian Railways
Online ticketing services may have their own rules about international card acceptance.
Choose an authorised booking channel and keep your booking confirmation.

Carry a backup method.

Do not assume your ordinary UK Google Pay setup will work with Indian merchant UPI QR codes.

Not necessarily. Some visitor-wallet arrangements support international numbers, subject to provider requirements.
Can tourists withdraw rupees from Indian ATMs?
Many compatible international debit cards support ATM withdrawals in India.
Fees, limits, network support and account settings can vary.
Should I pay in rupees or pounds at an Indian ATM?
Paying or withdrawing in the local currency often avoids a merchant or ATM provider's dynamic currency conversion.
Check the exchange rate and fees offered by your own card provider.
Can a UPI tourist wallet send money to an individual?
Do not assume so. Visitor prepaid wallet arrangements are generally designed for merchant payments, not unrestricted person-to-person transfers.
What if I paid twice for the same purchase?

Final Thoughts: The Safest Way to Pay in India
If you are visiting India for the first time, don't make your holiday more complicated by depending on a single payment app.
Bring a suitable international card, have a backup and keep some Indian rupees available.
If you qualify for a tourist UPI wallet, it may offer additional convenience for everyday merchant payments.
But your payment strategy should still work if your phone battery dies, a card gets declined or you reach a place with unreliable internet.
A little preparation before you leave home can make a surprising difference once you're in India.
