Can I Take Prescription Medication to India? Medicines, Customs Rules and a Travel Checklist
Travelling to India with regular medication? Before you pack your tablets, inhalers, injections or prescription treatments, there are a few things worth checking.
This guide explains how to prepare your medicines for travel, which prescriptions may need extra attention, what documentation to carry and what to do if you are unsure about Indian customs rules.
You can also use the free medication preparation checker and print a one-page travel checklist.
Many travellers carry medicines for their own medical treatment when visiting India. However, that does not mean every medicine can automatically be brought into the country.
Your medication's active ingredients, its legal classification, the quantity, the purpose of your visit and the documentation you carry can all matter.
Medicines containing narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances deserve particular attention because additional legal controls can apply.
The safest approach is to verify the individual medicine before you travel, keep it clearly labelled, and carry supporting prescription documents.
A prescription issued abroad does not, by itself, guarantee permission to bring a medicine into India.
Do not stop or change prescribed treatment because of travel uncertainty. Speak with your prescriber and obtain written advice from the relevant Indian authority when necessary.
Why Travelling to India with Medicine Needs a Little Preparation
Think about the last time you packed for a holiday.
You probably thought about your passport, clothes, phone charger, flight tickets and perhaps a guidebook.
If you take medicine every day, you may simply put it in your bag without giving it much thought.
After all, it has been prescribed to you by a doctor. You use it regularly. Why would travelling with it be a problem?
The complication is that medicine rules can change when you cross an international border.
A medicine that is routinely prescribed in one country might be controlled differently in another.
Sometimes the active ingredient is the issue. Sometimes it is the quantity or documentation. Sometimes the medicine itself requires a particular import procedure.
This is why I would never recommend relying on a social media comment saying that somebody carried the same tablets into India without being questioned.
One person's experience at an airport does not establish what the law allows.
India's 2026 Baggage Rules and Medicines
India introduced updated Baggage Rules on 2 February 2026. These deal with a range of matters affecting international passengers, including baggage allowances and customs declarations.
However, baggage allowances should not be confused with permission to import restricted or controlled medicines.
Medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances may also be subject to India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances legal framework.
In other words, the fact that something is for personal use does not automatically resolve every legal requirement.
You can read India's official International Travellers customs guidance and information published by the Central Bureau of Narcotics .
What About Controlled Medicines?
This is the part of the subject that deserves the most care.
The terms narcotic drug and psychotropic substance have specific legal meanings.
Some medicines used for pain, attention disorders, anxiety or sleep can fall within controlled-drug systems.
But you cannot reliably decide whether a medicine is restricted simply by looking at the medical condition it treats.
Two different treatments for the same condition may contain very different active ingredients and have different legal classifications.
Does Having a Prescription Make It Legal?
A prescription is important evidence that a medicine is being used for legitimate medical treatment.
However, it is not an automatic exemption from Indian drug import controls.
The Indian Consulate General in New York advises travellers carrying medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances for personal medical use to carry a valid prescription and supporting medical records.
Further conditions may apply under Indian law.
For an uncertain or controlled medicine, obtain written confirmation of the applicable requirements before departure.
Which Types of Medication Need Particular Attention?
The following examples are not lists of medicines that are automatically permitted or prohibited.
They are categories that may require additional checks.
| Medicine category | What travellers should check |
|---|---|
| ADHD medication | Check the exact active ingredient, whether it is controlled in India, and what documentation or authorisation may be required. |
| Strong pain medicines | Some opioid medicines are controlled. Check the substance, quantity and applicable import conditions. |
| Sleeping tablets | Certain sedatives and hypnotics may be psychotropic substances. Verify the particular drug. |
| Anxiety medication | Some benzodiazepines and related medicines are controlled. Do not assume all have the same legal status. |
| Injectable treatments | Check medicine rules, temperature storage, needles, syringes and airline security requirements. |
| Routine long-term medicines | Confirm an appropriate supply, documentation, storage and whether the ingredients present any import concerns. |
| Over-the-counter remedies | Check combination products carefully: some contain ingredients with additional controls. |
Can I Take ADHD Medication to India?
This is one of the questions where a broad yes-or-no answer could be misleading.
ADHD medicines are not all chemically identical. Different treatments contain different active ingredients.
A medicine prescribed in Britain or America may need careful checking against India's current controlled substance rules.
If you take ADHD medication, write down its generic ingredient name and strength.
Ask your prescriber or pharmacist to help identify the substance, and seek written clarification from the appropriate Indian authority before travelling.
Do this early enough to make alternative arrangements with your clinician if necessary.
Can I Take Sleeping Tablets or Anxiety Medication?
Some sleeping medicines and treatments for anxiety are classified as psychotropic substances.
Having a prescription is helpful, but the exact medicine and current Indian rules still need checking.
Never abruptly discontinue a medicine that may cause withdrawal symptoms.
If a problem is identified, discuss a safe treatment plan with your prescriber.
What About Strong Painkillers?
Some strong painkillers contain opioids that are subject to special legal controls.
Travellers should confirm the applicable rules before departure rather than assume that a medicine is acceptable because it is in its original box.
What About Diabetes Medication and Insulin?
For someone who needs insulin or another regular treatment, planning is not only about customs.
It is also about keeping the medicine at the correct temperature, having appropriate supplies and knowing how to manage unexpected delays.
If you use insulin, discuss storage arrangements and time-zone changes with your diabetes team.
Check airline security rules for liquids, needles, syringes and other devices.
The same principle applies to other temperature-sensitive or injectable medicines.
What Documents Should You Carry with Prescription Medicines?
The documents you need will depend on your medication and the applicable rules.
Nevertheless, the following are useful things to prepare.
An up-to-date prescription
Keep a copy identifying the prescribed medicine and dose. Where possible, make sure the generic active ingredient is clearly recorded.
A doctor's letter
A letter may help explain why the medicine is needed and how it is used. For controlled medicines, confirm whether particular wording or certification is required.
Original labelled packaging
Keep the pharmacy label, medicine name and strength visible rather than placing all tablets loose in unmarked containers.
Any required authorisation
If an Indian authority requires permission, a certificate or another document for your specific medicine, arrange this before travelling.
Emergency treatment information
Keep a list of medicines, allergies and important medical contacts somewhere you can access without your phone.
What Should a Doctor's Letter Say?
A helpful letter might identify the patient, the medicine's generic name, the strength, the prescribed dose and the medical need for treatment.
It may also state the journey dates and the expected quantity required.
The required information can depend on the drug and the authority involved.
Do not assume a general doctor's letter replaces a permit or other formal authorisation.
Should Medicine Go in Hand Luggage or Checked Baggage?
As a general travel precaution, keep essential medication and supporting documents accessible in hand luggage, subject to airline and security restrictions.
Checked bags can be delayed or occasionally lost.
If you need medicine at a particular time, you should not have to worry about whether your suitcase has arrived.
However, hand luggage rules for liquids, refrigerated medication, needles and medical equipment vary.
Check your airline's requirements, departure airport security rules and any transit-country restrictions.
Should You Bring Extra Medication?
Having an appropriate supply for foreseeable travel delays is sensible.
But the amount you carry must still comply with the applicable medicine import requirements.
There is no single safe quantity that applies to every prescription medicine.
Do not rely on a blanket claim that all travellers may carry a particular number of months' supply.
What About Medication on Connecting Flights?
Your journey may involve more than one country.
If you change flights in another country, its medicine rules and security procedures may also be relevant.
This is particularly important if you must collect baggage, pass through immigration or stay overnight.

This tool helps you work out which questions to resolve before travelling.
It does not identify whether an individual medicine is legally permitted in India.
Check Your Preparation
Privacy: Your selections are processed in your browser. The checker does not ask for your name, condition or medication details and does not send those details to this website.
What If You Cannot Confirm Whether Your Medicine Is Allowed?
Start with the exact generic active ingredient, not just the brand name.
Then contact the Indian embassy or consulate, or another relevant Indian authority able to clarify the applicable rules.
If an answer is unclear, ask whether you need a permit, prior authorisation, a particular quantity limit or additional documentation.
Try to obtain the answer in writing.
If you learn that a medicine cannot be carried as planned, speak with your prescriber well before departure.
Do not attempt to conceal a restricted medicine or make changes to its packaging to disguise it.
What If You Lose Your Medicine While Travelling in India?
This is worth thinking about before your journey.
Keep copies of your prescriptions and details of the active ingredients.
If your medication is lost or stolen, contact a qualified local healthcare professional and your travel insurer.
Do not buy prescription medicines from unknown sellers or assume that a product with a similar name contains the same ingredients.
When replacing medication, use a legitimate healthcare provider and licensed pharmacy.
