Sea turtles in Bali

On different parts of the island of Bali, hundreds of sea turtles need special attention in order to recover from injuries caused by fishing or tourism activities. Volunteers are called to care for the turtles and release them back to the sea where they belong. Bali Sea Turtle Rescue also has a conservation center where volunteers are needed to nurse new hatchlings until they are ready to survive in the wild. The people at the center will train and educate the volunteers, and there is something to do for everyone, including children.

Conserve threatened habitats in Sumatra

For ages, the flourishing rainforests of Sumatra have sustained the lives of wild species, including endemic birds, rhinos, orangutans, tigers, and more. Loro Parque Zoo Tenerife

Last year I visited Tenerife Island. While I was there I visited Loro Parque. This article is to tell you about this place. Loro Parque is a zoo that is located on the Spanish island of Tenerife. This is one of the 7 Canary Islands which are autonomous Spanish communities. The population of Tenerife is far greater than any of the other Canary Islands. With a total land area of 785 square miles, there are an estimated 900,000 inhabitants on the island. This makes up 43% of all the people who live in the Canaries.

Tenerife attracts more than 5 million tourists per year. There is no other location in Spain which attracts this many tourists. Despite being communities of Spain, the Canary Islands are actually positioned closer to the African continent. They sit about 200 miles northwest of Western Sahara and Morocco. But most of the flights and ferries to the Canaries run out of Spain.

Loro Parque is positioned just outside the Tenerife city of Puerto de la Cruz. This zoo has a wide range of plants and animals that you cannot see together anywhere else. One of the zoo’s biggest attractions is their parrots. No matter where you go in the zoo, you are bound to see a group of parrots nearby. But these aren’t just any parrots because a lot of them are endangered species of parrots. Some of these endangered parrots include the Spix macaw and the indigo-winged parrot. In total, there are more than 4,000 parrots at the zoo which include 350 different parrot species.

If you are interested in sea life, the zoo has orcas, dolphins, and sea lions. They even put on a live orca show for the people in attendance. As for the dolphins, their pool of dolphins is the largest one in the entire continent of Europe. In fact, the variety of animals you will see here is unlike any other zoo in Europe. You’ll see sharks, tigers, chimps, gorillas, pelicans, and more.

The magic begins as soon as you step foot into the zoo. You will be greeted by exotic birds as you explore a Thai village and navigate through the Katandra Treetops. It is a true tropical paradise that is relaxing and fun for both couples and families. If you are looking for an exciting tourist destination as you visit Spain, then you don’t want to miss Loro Parque.

To get to Loro Parque, you first must fly to Tenerife since it is an island. Just outside the main city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there is the island’s main airport called “Tenerife Norte Airport.” You can fly into this airport from any major Spanish city, such as Barcelona or Madrid. The airfare is about $150 so it is quite reasonable.

Once you are there, you will go to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and find Reyes Catolicos. This area has an express train which goes to and from Loro Parque about every 20 minutes. This train is free for any visitor of Loro Parque to take. If you are in the south of the island, you can use a bus service to get to Loro Parque instead.

My visit to Mount Teide Volcano in Tenerife

Mount Teide is a volcano located on the Spanish island of Tenerife. This is one of the seven Canary Islands that are autonomous communities of Spain. The summit of Mount Teide happens to be the highest area in all of Spain, including the mainland. Also, out of all the Atlantic-based islands, the summit of Mount Teide is the highest area that is above sea level. The total height of the summit is 12,198 feet or 3,718 meters. As a volcano, it measures up to 24,600 feet from its base on the ocean floor to its top peak. This makes it the world’s highest volcano that is not in the Hawaiian Islands.

Mount Teide Tenerife

Mount Teide is part of Teide National Park. This is a national park of Spain that is located in the central area of Tenerife. Tourists from all around the world come to the island each year to see the volcano. Do not worry because it has not erupted since the year 1909. In fact, it has mostly icy conditions so there is very little chance of an eruption taking place anytime soon. The seismic activity underground is always being monitored so there is very little risk involved by visiting this site.

Trip to Mount Teide Tenerife

There are two ways you can reach the volcano. You can take a cable car or you can climb up it. If you’re just a casual tourist, then you’d probably prefer the cable car. You will have to travel to the Teide Cable Car Base Station which is on the bottom of the mountain. At the base station, you can eat at the buffet, drink coffee at the cafe, or just rest in the relaxation area. Once you get in the cable car, it will take you 3,555 meters up to the Teide Cable Car Upper Station. In this station, you can enjoy a Wi-Fi internet connection, public telephone service, and public toilets.

Whether you’re on the north side or southern side of Tenerife, you can travel to Mount Teide by taking highway TF-21. From the northern end, you can start driving from La Orotava until you get to Portillo de la Villa. You will see that highway TF-21 travels throughout Teide National Park. From the southern end, you can start from Vilaflor and go until you reach the park. There are public buses available too if you don’t have a rental car.

There is limited access to the peak of the volcano. The workers of the park want to protect the volcano for environment purposes. However, you can obtain a free permit at one of the offices found throughout the park. You can also apply for one online for free. Once you’re at the peak, you will get to enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and the hundreds of acres of land which fills the park.

If you plan to hike up the volcano, the best route starts from an area called Refugio de Altavista. Be prepared to spend between 4 and 5 hours hiking from the bottom up to the summit. Bring plenty of water and energy-based foods with you because the hike requires a lot of physical activity.

Stonehenge is basically made up of large standing stones that are aligned in a ring on a grassy landscape. Archaeologists believe these stones were aligned sometime during the Bronze Age or Neolithic Age, which would be around 3,000 B.C. and 2,000 B.C. Stonehenge is situated within artificially changed levels of land called earthworks. There are also hundreds of burial mounds in this area. This has archaeologists and historians believing that Stonehenge was probably a burial site before the stones were erected. This was proven to be true after the bank and ditch of the land had been dug into for the first time. Diggers found human bone deposits in the soil that were dated as being from 3,000 B.C. It is believed the land was used as a burial ground for at least five hundred years before it became a monumental site with standing stones on it. This archaeological evidence was discovered in 2008 and it has changed how scientists view the early days of the Stonehenge and the land which surrounds it.

Stonehenge has certainly become a huge tourist attraction in the United Kingdom. Since 1882, the British government has declared Stonehenge to be a Scheduled Ancient Monument that is protected by the law from any unauthorized changes or developments. This means the British government, or the Crown, owns the property in which the Stonehenge stands on. In 1986, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization added Stonehenge to its list of World Heritage Sites. Because of this, Stonehenge is now considered an official landmark by the United Nations. Most people who have never been to England before have still heard of Stonehenge. It even made it onto the list of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World.

Stonehenge Mystery

There are so many theories about Stonehenge that have been made over the years to explain why it exists and how it was constructed. Although historians and archaeologists cannot say for sure how the Stonehenge was constructed, the historical evidence they’ve gathered can certainly disprove a lot of the theories that are out there. For one thing, we know that Stonehenge is older than the Egyptian pyramids. The construction of the pyramids started in approximately 2,630 B.C. and ended on 2,611 B.C. Even though the exact date of Stonehenge’s construction is unknown, it is believed to have been built between 3,100 B.C. and 2,800 B.C. This would make the Stonehenge about 300 years older than the pyramids.

The religion known as Neo-Druidism contains followers which worship nature and respects the prehistoric societies that came before them. In their religion, the Stonehenge is very significant to them because of this. In 1905, the Ancient Order of Druids held a huge initiation at the Stonehenge for those who were trying to become Druids themselves. All the followers supposedly were wearing fake beards and white robes throughout the initiation process. Nowadays, any type of religious ceremony or ritual at the Stonehenge is strictly forbidden. When this happened, the Druids started going to other locations for their initiations and created mockups of the Stonehenge monuments in order to recreate the real thing. Of course, these mockups were nowhere near as authentic as the real Stonehenge.

Stonehenge Theories

The construction of the Stonehenge is what many people theorize about. Since it was built in ancient times, people wonder how ancient humans were able to lift heavy stones on top of other taller stones without the help of machinery or tools. The mystery surrounding how the Stonehenge was built is kind of the same mystery that surrounds how the Egyptian pyramids were built. Some have speculated that alien beings from another world had constructed the Stonehenge. One reason why they believe this is because the stones are arranged in a circle, which is similar to those mysterious crop circles that have been reported. Others believe that Stonehenge is just an ancient clock that relied on sunlight and shadows for telling time. On the other hand, the theory that’s more likely to be true is that the stones of Stonehenge are grave markers, since it’s already been proven that the land it’s on used to be a burial ground.

If the Stonehenge was built by humans, it would have taken a total of about 30 million working hours in order to complete it. There were only two different kinds of stones used during the construction of the Stonehenge. The first kind was a type of sandstone called “Sarsen stones.” These sandstones weighed approximately 25 tons, which is equal to roughly 50,000 pounds. Also, the height of each stone was around 18 feet. The second type of stone used was bluestones and they weighed around 4 tons, or 8,000 pounds. Bluestones are not naturally found in this region of England, since they are basically volcanic rock. So, the ancient builders of this monument ended up traveling 240 miles away just to retrieve this volcanic rock and bring it back to the construction site. Again, they didn’t have any machines or sophisticated ways of transporting these heavy stones. That is why it took so many hours of labor for them to successfully do this.

The way in which the stones were aligned is quite fascinating. The ancient builders didn’t just randomly place the stones on the ground in a circle. Instead, they apparently implemented geometry and mathematics into how the stones were placed because their alignment is perfect with the midsummer sunset and the midwinter sunset. Not only that, the stones were aligned with the greatest southerly moon rising and the greatest northerly sun setting. This could mean the Stonehenge was used as an astronomical observatory, but others seem to believe that ritual activities was the purpose for the monument being built. There is no doubt that religious followers of many different religions have used the site of Stonehenge for their worship and prayer rituals over the centuries. Historians are just unsure about if this was supposed to be the original purpose of the site.

Today the Stonehenge continues to be a huge tourist attraction. There was a time when tourists and visitors were actually allowed to touch the stones with their hands. But today, the stones are all roped off and touching them is no longer allowed. In a way, this is understandable because the caretakers are just trying to preserve the stones as much as possible. Throughout the centuries, the Stonehenge did suffer a lot of damage to it. You’ll notice there are some stones of the monument which appear to have fallen over. Experts say that more than half of the original stones of Stonehenge are missing while others just fell over. Right now, 93 stones or rocks remain at the Stonehenge site. It is believed that 165 stones were used originally when the Stonehenge was first built. Nobody knows where the missing stones could have been taken or who would have taken them. There is evidence of broken fragments of bluestone at the site, which could be an indication that someone tried to break parts of the stone to steal it. But when you consider the Stonehenge is about 5,000 years old, it is amazing that it still looks as good as it does today.

Most haunted places in the world to visit

Believe in them or not, there are very few amongst us who do not love a good ghost story from time to time. Now, you could always flick on a horror channel and take a peek at a couple of good movies. There is no fun in that though. Oh no… If you want to truly experience frights then you need to look into what people have encountered in some of the most haunted places around the world. Now obviously there are hundreds, if not thousands, of haunted places around the globe.

Here are some of my favourite most haunted places from around the world that you might like to visit someday.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Pennsylvania

As you are going to discover throughout this list; there are a number of places which are almost guaranteed to be rife with paranormal activity. Prisons are one of them. The Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the most haunted in the world. This prison is notable for being one of the first (if not the first) in the world to introduce solitary confinement. This is a perfectly legitimate tactic to ‘punish’ inmates and guarantee the safety of staff. The problem is, confinement on a long-term basis can make you go a little bit crazy. Perhaps this is what contributes to the many sights in the former prison i.e. it is just somebody’s imagination. Maybe it is the ‘crazy’ people back for revenge, who knows?

Evil cackling, shadowy figures, and ghostly faces have been seen all over the prison. As you can probably guess, disembodied footsteps and other sounds of unknown origin are also rife. Scary stuff!

The Sanitorium is the second type of building on this list which is almost guaranteed to have carious moans and howls heard throughout the night. It is believed that well over 60,000 people died within this building. It seems only fit that a few of them would stick around, right? Many of these deaths were not actually down to sickness. Oh no. That would not be gruesome enough. Instead they were down to failed experiments and all sorts of mistreatment. This is pretty much asking for the building to be haunted. A number of ghost investigation teams have investigated the building. Some have discovered a presence. All provide compelling evidence. If you can imagine a type of ghost, it can probably be found in this building.

We are heading to the other side of the world for this haunted location. Let me introduce you to what is regarded as one of the most haunted locations in Australia. The building may be beautiful in appearance but it seems to house a rather deadly secret. It has played host to a number of deaths. Perhaps the most intriguing a stable boy who ended up burning to death, oh, and a young boy who fell down the stairs, in fact, there were around 10 deaths in just 50 years. Crazy, right? It is believed that most of these people still reside in the building…in some form or another.

This is my favorite haunted location on this list. The main reason being that I have had a personal experience here. No, I did not see anything. However as you walk up those tight staircases and through the ancient rooms you can’t help but feel a presence. Whilst this place was never built as a prison it has housed a number of criminals over the years. This includes a number of Nazi war prisoners. This has also been the site of countless numbers of executions. This includes the death of a couple of Henry VIII’s wives! Perhaps the scariest story of this building relates to two young boys, princes in fact, who were murdered and buried under the stairs. It is said that they can still be seen. They walk around the building, hand in hand, looking absolutely terrified.

Borgvattnet, Sweden

Sticking in Europe for this one! Here we are heading to a small place in Sweden known as Jamtland County. This building, known in English as ‘The Haunted Vicarage’ has been in place since 1876. It was not until the late 1920’s that sightings began to happen though. Most of the sightings around this time were poltergeist in nature. You know the stuff, laundry being thrown about and all. It was not until later on that old women started to sit around watching people sleep (dead old women, well, their ghosts), apparitions could be seen in the corridors, and well just about everything else under the sun. The building is now a café. It still has some bedrooms though. If you are daring you can spend the night there. If you manage then you will get a certificate to tell you that you survived….if you do.

Legend has it that a young girl died on this island by drowning. It is said that she has never left. This is regarded as one of the most haunted locales in Mexico. Many of those who inhabited this area have refused to go near the water through fear of what may happen. This happened until a man by the name of Julian arrived on the island in the 1950s. Intending to be a recluse, he knew nothing of the history of the place. Pretty soon though the girl started to approach Julian to tell him how she could never leave. In order to please her, he purchased dolls and hung them up around the island. It is said that Julian could not purchase these dolls quickly enough. The dead girl was not happy and this led to the death of Julian in exactly the same location that she perished. These dolls can still be found hanging up around the island. Their eyes follow you. Both Julian and the dead girl remain on the island….NEVER TO ESCAPE!

Poveglia, the world’s most haunted island

Sadly the Poveglia Island is now closed to visitors but there are some tour companies that still carry out private tours to the Island in the Venice Lagoon. Poveglia Island has a reputation of being the world’s most haunted island. There used to be a mental asylum run by a murderous doctor on the island and in the medieval period people with plague were burned.  The mad doctor apparently comminuted suicide by jumping off the tower. It is said that thousands of people have died on the Poveglia Island. Local fishermen fishing around the island say that sometimes bones would get stuck in their nets. You will have to find a travel tour company in Venice if you want to visit the island. So if you’re heading of to Venice, why not take a boat trip to Poveglia Island. 

Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan in India

India too has its share of haunted places. One place in particular is supposed one of the most haunted places in the world. The Bhangarh fort near Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan has a reputation of being haunted and tops the list being one of the most haunted. The Bhangarh Fort is built on a deserted town called Bhangarh near the popular tourist place of Jaipur in Rajastan.

There are several stories and myths associated legends of Bhangarh Fort. One such story goes that the son of the owner died violently their spirit lingers on in the physical world. I have written a book called, “Real Ghost And Paranormal Stories From India” where detailed my person ghost and paranormal stories.

Anyway, in addition, to this, it is said that a man who used to do black magic in the area cursed the residents of the fort that they will die unnatural deaths and their spirit will haunt the place. Interestingly, his curse seemed to have stuck and many of the residents and owners of the place have died in unusual circumstances. That is why when you visit the place, you will not find houses around this fort. Most people would just not buy land to build houses in the vicinity of the Bhangarh fort. Funny thing is that there is a government notice board for tourists not to enter the fort after sunset. Would you go to such a place (after sunset)? I know I wouldn’t.

Real Ghost And Paranormal Stories From India

If you ever visit Devon in the South of England then do visit the two villages of Lynton and Lynmouth situated on the North of Exmoor National Park. I was there recently and really enjoyed myself. What I found most interesting was the Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway purely powered by water from the West Lyn River situated about a mile away. The Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway actually joins the two twin villages (some say they are towns). Once you are on the top of the cliff there’s a coffee shop and had one of the best cafe lattes I had for a long time. The views from there were spectacular. We then walked about a mile to the Valley of the Rocks. It was slightly scary walking the narrow lane as one side there was mountains and the other side a cliff and one slip and you would end up in the sea. 

Sun holidays damage DNA and cause cancer

Who doesn’t like going on holidays!

Some of us like to sit in the sun for hours, be it on the beach or enjoying skiing. Sadly, while we are lazing away in the sun, the solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) of the very sun we are enjoying can actually cause damage to our DNA. Here’s an interesting article that was published in the prestigious Journal of Investigative Dermatology (Nature Publishing Group).

A group of scientists headed by Mark Nieuwenhuijsen of St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s Hospital in London, investigated that although sunlight increases the vitamin D status, the ultraviolet radiation in the sun can cause DNA damage. The way the DNA is damaged is by forming thymine dimers (T-T dimmers) increasing chances of skin cancer.

Thymine is one of 4 bases of DNA represented by the letter T. Other nucleotides include adenine (A), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). They are the subunits (building blocks) of DNA that link to form the strands of DNA. In order to form the 2 stands of double-stranded that contain the genetic information, the bases, guanine (G) and cytosine (C) while adenine (A) and thymine (T) form base pairs via hydrogen bonds. What the UVR light can do is cause photo-damage to the DNA by causing the formation of molecular lesions called the T-T dimmers. These are often called pre-mutagenic lesions and happen to be altered DNA structures that have the ability to be mutagenic. Basically, these dimmers have the ability to cause melanomas (skin cancer) in human beings.

Those going on holidays in the sun will have to make a decision if exposing themselves in the sun is worth the risk or not. Although one cannot completely eliminate sun exposure, the time they expose themselves will have to be monitored. Basically it’s a matter of maintaining optimal vitamin D status and minimizing risk of skin cancer.

One of the major drawbacks of this experiment was that a small sample section (n=71) was used and the assessment was carried out over a period of only 6 days. In addition, the observations were made based on the holiday maker’s diary registrations. Furthermore, there was no mention of the holiday destination. The part of the body that was exposed to the sun was also not mentioned.

What this study shows that although sun is good for vitamin D, it has the ability to damage DNA. For a holiday maker in the sun, this means they will have to make efforts to reduce their exposure to the sun. Although this experiment was carried out on 2 nationalities – Danish and Spanish, a wider section of the people would need to be carried out to get a better picture. Also dietary habits also need to be taken into account. For instance, some people eat more eggs which are high in vitamin D. Also gender, skin type, age, variations in the way subjects applied sunscreens and the rest of the variable parameters could also have affected the results.

But then this a real life study carried out on actual people holidaying in the sun. The tests speak for themselves. Those in the sun for extended hours had increased T-T dimmers (in the urine) and 25(OH)D (vitamin D in blood serum).

How do you protect yourself from UV rays?

More people are likely to die from skin cancer caused by too much exposure to the sun than due to low levels of vitamin D. Considering that malignant melanoma is one of the most common types of cancer in the Western world (white skinned population), those travelling to sunny destinations will have to take precautions to prevent excess exposure to the sun.

Let’s take a look at how we can protect ourselves from the sun. Living in a hot country like that of India where temperatures often reach 45 degree Celsius, this is coming from firsthand experience.

You can use a Sun Meter UV card that measures the intensity of the UV rays that can burn your skin. These cards change color from white to dark purple depending on the UV ray strength. It’s quite useful when going on holidays.

Apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of more than 30. Although it does not completely protect you from the harmful radiation of the sun, it does prevent penetration of harmful radiation. I don’t go out without it. You can always use something called, Sun Bum spray sunscreen for kids.

Protect your skin with clothing. Wear long sleeved shirts and pants. But mind you, clothing does not protect you completely. If you can see through a garment, this means that UV light can go through too. Clothing that are tightly woven helps deflect UV rays more than thin cotton. There’s a range of UV protective clothing for both men and women. For instance this, “Columbia Women’s Bahama Long Sleeve Shirt” supposed to be made from material that blocks the sun’s harmful rays.

Wear sun protection gloves. For those doing skiing or engaging in sports, it’s a good idea to wear sun gloves especially by those who are going to be in the sun whole day. Some even wear arm sleeves such as these to protect their arms. It’s certainly good for activities such as cycling, fishing, golfing, jogging, and climbing types of outdoor activities.

Wear a cap. At least you will have your face in the shade. Make sure that you have a cap with a wide brim and a neck flap.

When out in bright sunlight you should always wear sunglasses. Not only will they protect your eyesight from harmful ultraviolet rays, but wearing large-framed wraparound shades also protects your face from sunburn. So you see, it’s a delicate balance between exposing yourself to the sun and getting vitamin D. Just because a well reputed journal has come out with a research, this does not mean people will stop going on holidays. You just have to be more careful and balance it appropriately.
